Gen X DJ found murdered
Stilwater Gazette newspaper headline

Under threat of being burned alive, a desperate Veteran Child sneaks into the Saints Hideout, where Shaundi is weighing bags of Loa Dust. In a struggle to get away Shaundi is knocked unconscious, but as Veteran Child attempts to leave with her The Protagonist enters. A small gunfight ensues, but by using Shaundi as a Human Shield, Veteran Child narrowly manages to escape.[1]

The Protagonist chases after Veteran Child, and with help from Pierce over the phone, manages to track him down to On Track. The Protagonist uses flashbangs to separate Veteran Child from hiding behind Shaundi, and promptly guns him down. The Protagonist helps Shaundi up and they leave On Track, as The General's Hounfor pulls away in the background.[2]

The following text has been transcribed verbatim from the game files.
Upon completion of the mission, it is available in-game at Newspaper Clipboards.

A local DJ is dead after a shootout at On Track nightclub involving the Saints and Sons of Samedi. Witnesses describe scenes of terror as the Saints leader burst into the nightclub firing at everything and everyone. It's unclear whether Veteran Child's death was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or if he was in fact connected to the Sons of Samedi in some way. Officials have not yet determined if an earlier shooting at Cocks Nightclub is somehow related.

Look for Veteran Child at Cocks

As soon as the mission begins, head north to the Night Club named Cocks.

Kill the Samedi protecting Veteran Child

Kill all Sons of Samedi enemies inside.

Go to On Track

Pierce informs The Protagonist that Veteran Child is in fact at the On Track night club.

Kill Veteran Child

Kill all opponents while heading downwards. At the bottom, a boss fight begins against Veteran Child.

Find a way to separate Shaundi from Veteran Child

Veteran Child is protected from all damage while he is holding Shaundi, so pick up one of the many Flashbangs dotted around the floor (they are marked by a green arrow) and take cover. Flashbangs stun targets without causing damage, so throw one at Veteran Child's feet and take cover so The Protagonist isn't stunned as well; when it detonates, Veteran Child and Shaundi both become dazed. Veteran Child briefly lets go of Shaundi, so make use of this to shoot Veteran Child before he grabs Shaundi again. He can take a lot of damage, so when he does grab Shaundi again, simply pick up another Flashbang and repeat. When Veteran Child is exposed, he is weakest against shotguns. While fighting Veteran Child, other Sons of Samedi join in the fight - some may throw Pipe Bombs, but they are easily killed.

After two or three stuns and subsequent rounds of damage, Veteran Child falls and the mission ends.

Newspaper ss04 Veteran Child

The Stilwater Gazette newspaper clipping from the completion screen and Newspaper Clipboard.

  • Following this mission, 89.0 Generation X becomes unavailable and is replaced by Ultor FM.
  • The fourth mission in each story arc in Saints Row 2[3][4] features a member of the 3rd Street Saints in peril, but this is the only one of the three where an ally doesn't die.
  • When using cheats, make sure to turn off "Super Explosions", as the Flashbangs are significantly less effective with it on.
  • This mission bears a resemblance to the later Saints Row: The Third mission, "Three Way", both missions have Shaundi being used as a Human Shield, with The Protagonist being forced to use a Flashbang (or in Saints Row: The Third's case, the Fart in a Jar, which is an upgraded Flashbang) to release and save her.
  • Cocks is pictured in the Stilwater Gazette newspaper article that appears on the mission completion screen, although Veteran Child died at On Track.
    • The building in the picture matches neither $tock$ or Cocks - it features a giant dollar sign[5] - representing $tock$ instead of a giant cent sign and roosters. $tock$ in Saints Row does not have a giant dollar sign.
  • This mission is one of three gang-arc missions in Saints Row 2 which do not unlock a neighborhood. The others are "Assault on Precinct 31" and "Waste Not Want Not". This is the only one of the three which does not take place within an Ultor neighborhood, instead the mission takes place within The Ronin (Cocks) and The Brotherhood (On Track) neighborhoods.
  • It is possible to use Pepper Spray to separate Shaundi and Veteran Child, instead of using Flashbangs.
    • It is not possible to use Stun Gun.
    • If the Chainsaw is equipped, it is disabled during the fight with Veteran Child.
  • It is possible to use the AR-50 w/Grenade Launcher to fire a Flashbang then immediately attack Veteran Child without switching weapons.
  • The events of this mission are referred to in the Saints Row IV mission "De Plane Boss". However, the Saints Row IV version has many differences from this one:
    • In Saints Row 2 The Protagonist uses Flashbangs to separate Shaundi and Veteran Child but in Saints Row IV they use a Stun Gun.
    • The layout of On Track is slightly different and the dance floor uses different colors.
    • There are no Sons of Samedi to fight on the way down to kill Veteran Child, unlike in Saints Row 2.
  • In the games following Saints Row 2, it becomes clear that the events of this mission were highly traumatic for Shaundi.[reference?]
  • When replaying this mission after unlocking Shaundi as a homie, it is possible to call in Shaundi as a homie even though she's supposed to be kidnapped. As a result there will be two Shaundis, one that's following you, and one that's being held hostage by Veteran Child.
  • Using aimed shots at exposed parts of Veteran Child while he's holding Shaundi deal no damage. He must be separated from her before he can be damaged.

"We Need To Talk" cutsceneEdit

Veteran Child: "Nice place you got here Shaundi..."
Shaundi: "What are you doing here?"
Veteran Child: "I've been watchin' this place, I know you're here alone..."
Shaundi: "Not for long I'm not, so you better get th-"
Veteran Child: "Don't make this difficult..."
Shaundi throws Loa Dust in his face
Veteran Child: "Bitch!"
Veteran Child knocks Shaundi unconscious and sees The Protagonist
Veteran Child: "Back off! Back the FUCK off!"
The Protagonist: "You think you're walkin' outta here?"
Veteran Child: "Unless you wanna bullet in this bitch, you're goddamn right I am..."
The Protagonist: "Kid, you just made a stup-"
Veteran Child shoots at The Protagonist
Veteran Child: "You know who the fuck I am?!"
The Protagonist: "Seein' as I'm gonna kill you in a few seconds I don't really give a shit."
Veteran Child: "Keep your distance!"
The Protagonist: "Shit!"

Veteran Child calls The Protagonist
Veteran Child: "If you wanna see Shaundi again, you better come to Cocks."
The Protagonist calls Pierce
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "Veteran Child wants me to see him at Cocks..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Yo Pierce, I'm on my way to Stocks. VC told me to meet him there."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "VC's trying to get me to meet him at Cocks."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Veteran Child is trying to get me to meet him at Cocks."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Pierce, Veteran Child wants me to meet him at Cocks."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "Pierce, listen up, Veteran Child wants me to meet him at Cocks."
Pierce: "You think it's a trap?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "The little prick called me and told me where to find him, either it's a trap or he's just a fuckin' idiot. In case Shaundi's not there I need you to look into other places he might take her."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Of course it's a trap, it's what I would do. Listen, I need you to find out other places he might have taken our girl."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Probably, but fuck it, he can't take me. Do me a favor though, look into any other places he might have stashed Shaundi."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Seeing as I'm planning on shooting everyone in the bar I'll feel bad if it's not. Shaundi's counting on us Pierce, we need to find other places he might take her."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Probably, but it's the only lead we got. Look, while I'm dealing with this I need you to find any other places he would take Shaundi."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "It's gotta be. I need you to look into other places he might have dragged Shaundi to."
Pierce: "I'm on it."
The Protagonist calls Veteran Child
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "You got no idea who you're messing with little man."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "I'm coming for you, you piece of shit."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Come on Veteran Child you're making it too easy for me to kill you."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "If you lay one hand on her..."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "You really don't think you're getting out of this alive do you?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "Taking Shaundi was about the stupidest thing you could have done."
Veteran Child: "You think I'm scared of you?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "You should be..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "If you were smart you would be."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "I know you're scared of me."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Christ you're annoying, no wonder Shaundi dumped your ass."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Honey, why don't you save me the trouble and put a gun in your mouth."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "I don't think you're scared. You're stupid enough to think you actually have a chance."
Veteran Child: "You can't talk to the triple platinum Veteran Child like that!"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "Let's see if you can still run your mouth after I knock your goddamn teeth out."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Bitch, you are gonna be begging for me to kill you."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "I really hope you don't talk this much when I'm killing you."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Run your mouth all you want, I'm gonna be shutting it permanently soon."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Face it baby, you're living on borrowed time."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "I'm gonna enjoy taking you apart."
Veteran Child: "We'll see about that, won't we?"
The Protagonist calls Pierce
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "Veteran Child was never here, you got anything?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "They weren't here. You find anything?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Veteran Child was smart enough not to show, you got anything?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "It was a trap like we thought, but Shaundi and VC aren't here. You got some good news?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Veteran Child didn't even show, tell me you found something."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "Well, I called it. No Veteran Child, no Shaundi. You find anything on your end?"
Pierce: "Yeah, Veteran Child was sheduled to spin at On Track tonight...want me to get a crew and take him out?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "No worries, I can drop this asshole myself."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Nah, I want this asshole myself."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Don't worry about, I wanna take care of this personally."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Don't worry about it, I can handle this."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "No no...this one's all me."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "Thanks for the offer, but I'm looking forward to doing this one on my own."
The Protagonist calls Veteran Child
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "It's hard to find good help these days."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "That the best you got?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "You weren't as dumb as I thought."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "You didn't think that trap would stop me, did you?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "You sure know how to show a girl a good time."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "So you're at On Track huh?"
Veteran Child: "Oh shit..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "Yeah I was surprised too."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Oh shit is right motherfucker."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Granted I didn't really think much of you in the first place, so I don't know how much that's really worth."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "I'll be honest I'm kinda insulted."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Whaddya say we go on a second date?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "I always thought it was kinda a shitty night club, but hey who am I to judge?"
Veteran Child: "Fuck me..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "Spin your favorite record because when I find you you're a dead man..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "Did you really think you could hide from me?"
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Look on the bright side, you bought yourself a couple more minutes to live."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "You better have something better planned at On Track, because if not killing you is probably gonna feel like a let down."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "I got an idea, how about I meet you at your place?"
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "I want you to know that I'm coming for you Veteran Child, and when I get there I'm putting a bullet in your worthless skull."
Veteran Child: "This can't be fuckin' happening..."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 1): "You better believe it is, Veteran Child."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 2): "See you soon."
The Protagonist (Male Voice 3): "Oh well, we can talk about this in person soon enough."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 1): "Good talk."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 2): "Meet you at On Track? Yeah, that sounds great."
The Protagonist (Female Voice 3): "See ya soon sweetie."
You think you can kill me in my club?

The Protagonist: " ok?"
Shaundi: "My ex boyfriend's a dick."
The Protagonist: "Pretty much, yeah."
The Protagonist: "I can't believe you got your ass kicked by that chump..."
Shaundi: "Did I mention that my ex boyfriend's a dick?"
The Protagonist: "You should go home and rest."
Shaundi: "If by resting you mean smokin' an ounce, then hell yeah..."
