Hello,

I wanted to ask you if this community would be interested in helping us improve search suggestions by participating in a little experiment? As part of our constant effort to improve this facet of our search functionality, we want to try out some alternate methods. If you agree, we will try out these changes here and measure the results.

The testing period will last between two to four weeks.

During that period you will see the following improvements: much faster search suggestions and a different look for the way they appear.

The possible drawbacks are: search suggest will only provide namespace suggestions (no images or categories), and any new articles created during the test will not automatically appear in search suggest (although we can manually add them if that will help). --semanticdrifter @fandom (help forum | blog) 14:58, October 2, 2013 (UTC)

I'm a big fan of search improvements, so it sounds good to me.
Is this already in use anywhere else, to see how it looks?
We sometimes get people in the chat who have trouble finding the information they need, so I'll begin directly asking them about their experiences with the search.
If people immediately don't like how it looks/works, can the experiment be aborted early?

It is not currently in use, I'm afraid. It's still a bit early days.
Of course, we would prefer not to abort the experiment but rather take the negative feedback as part of the results but if it completely wrecks the wiki experiment and the community feels strongly about it we will be able to shut it off.

Just a heads up that this experiment will be going live this week (took a bit longer to prepare than I anticipated) and is scheduled to run through the end of the year. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Cool, thanks for the notice.

There's 2 problems with the search popup on Special:RecentChanges, and any page with with Admin Dashboard.
  • AdminDashboard.scss sets z-index to 1 for .WikiaMainContent, and the search popup presumably doesn't have z-index set.
  • The top position is wrong for some reason, with it hovering over the search box instead of under it, presumably due to the odd placement of the search box with the Admin Dashboard.
This isn't to do with the custom site style here, you can enter toggleCSS() into the console to disable the site style.

In addition to the AdminDashboard.scss style,
  • WallNotification.scss line 2 sets .WikiaArticle as z-index: 1;
  • WallNotification.scss line 5 sets .WikiaArticle as z-index: 5;
So the search pop-up needs to be at least 6.
The search popup menu disappears when I change the focus to the inspector - none of the other menus on the site disappear like that. :/
edit: Ditto for user pages, and probably other namespaces, but since it's the same cause and solution, I'm not going to go through and check them all.

New problem: I typed the word "Vehicles" then clicked "See all results", expecting to be taken to results on Special:Search, but was instead taken to Category:Vehicles.
edit:
Cause: I have "Enable Go search" set in my preferences, when I disable that, it acts as expected.
With Go search enabled, clicking "See all results" is acting as if I pressed enter and is performing a Go search - which isn't what you'd expect from a link named "See all results".
(edit: I originally said "Vehicle" above, I meant "Vehicles", which is currently a redirect to "Category:Vehicles", typing "vehicle" alone words fine, typing the exact name of a page and clicking "See all results" is the problem)

The top position is wrong due to .adm-dash-search .WikiaSearch being set to float: right;
Personally, I'd set .adm-dash-search to float: right instead, and set .AdminDashboardHeader to clear:right or both
Or... I'd fix the problem better by moving the search box back to the normal location, so there doesn't need to be a search case for the search box at all.
On Special:AdminDashboard itself, there is enough space for the search bar.
This style is override the normal right value:
.AdminDashboardTabs.expanded {
right: 10px;
}
With these styles applied to override the defaults:
 .AdminDashboardTabs.expanded {
 right: 340px;
 }
 .adm-dash-search {
 float: right;
 z-index: 2;
 position: relative;
 }
 .adm-dash-search .WikiaSearch {
 float:none;
 }

Everything looks and works perfectly fine - and I think it looks better than the Advanced and General tabs remain in the same place, instead of moving around.
(Note: with this, there's still a small problem because the wikiheader height is different for the Admin Dashboard, and there's a further inconsistency introduced due to the local CSS - but the whole idea is that the Admin Dashboard shouldn't have these different cases in the first place, so if it was made more consistent, those problems would disappear.)

The new search suggestions do not appear when using the wide search box. (The new one that appears at smaller widths)

I'm kinda missing the experimental search already!
How did the experiment go? Is there any chance that it will be returning?
