Forum Index > Saints Row Wiki > Related videos module coming soon

Hi, Over the past couple of months we have been developing and testing a related videos module on some wikis like Harry Potter, Hunger Games and Halo. During these tests we have been tracking the number of video plays as well as collecting community feedback. We are now ready to expand the rollout to the rest of the site, and we are starting with wikis that there are the most videos for - which includes your wiki!

The videos we have are fully licensed from video partners we have developed relationships with. They include videos such as trailers, famous movie/TV clips, walkthroughs and behind the scenes interviews. We currently have video content from Screenplay and are working to create partnerships with other vendors, including Hulu, soon. You can see the video content we have by visiting the video wiki and either searching by keyword or checking out the various categories.

When the module is enabled, it will already be pre-populated with videos related to your topic. We will try to pick the best videos from the video wiki, but understand that the community's ability to adjust the content is very important, so you will have access to both adding and removing videos within the module. This can include adding videos already on your wiki or adding new ones from the video wiki.

Our high-quality videos will compliment the fantastic articles and photos on your wiki. On 5 of the test wikis the videos in the modules have already had over 10,000 views. This is an exciting number and we hope as we make more videos available these numbers will increase. We are in the process of pre-populating the related videos module for your wiki, and expect the module to go live within the next couple of weeks, so please let me if you have any any questions or concerns. As this was an automated post which didn't remove the default message, I doubt this will be read, but I'm recording my opinion here anyway.
This sounds like a good feature in general, but I'm unsure how it would be useful on this particular wiki. Videos aren't valued very highly here to begin with, but there are relevant videos in many articles. Mission articles, for example, often contain a video of the mission. But we insist that everything shown in a video is also included as text.
Because video usage here is very specific, I'm unsure how "Related videos" is relevant in the case of a walkthrough video on a Mission article. Unless the videos are also related to that mission, they are not relevant to that article.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what this feature is and what it does. --452 02:36, May 24, 2012 (UTC)
Hey user452, Did I post in the wrong place? If so, sorry (and please let me know the best place to do so). We are working on populating the module with videos, so I will let you know once its ready to be activated here. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best, Sarah@fandom (help forum | blog) 16:34, May 25, 2012 (UTC)
Well, this is a help forum, where people post when the need help, but I hadn't even considered that you'd posted in the wrong place. this is what you posted. --452 00:49, May 26, 2012 (UTC)
For future reference, where would you like for me to post these types of communications? Sarah@fandom (help forum | blog) 17:15, May 29, 2012 (UTC)
There is no best place for a message such as this. I would think that Forum:General Chat would make more sense than Forum:Wiki Help, but you can post wherever you want. --452 17:31, May 29, 2012 (UTC)
Could you please take a look at this article: Poseidon Alley Docks, and explain to me how the listed videos are at all related? That was just the first article I landed on after clicking Special:Random, but I went on to view several other random articles, which had equally random videos listed in the related videos sidebar. --452 01:08, June 10, 2012 (UTC)
Hi, I am not familar with the topic, so its harder for me to know what is actually related or random for you here. We are working on getting more content, and there is the option to add more videos, so feel free to adjust it to better fit. Sarah@fandom (help forum | blog) 18:22, June 11, 2012 (UTC)
At this point, the only way in which I would "adjust it to better fit [this wiki]" is to remove it.
While I can see the benefit for this sidebar on more general wikis, I don't think it's very helpful on this wiki.
That particular article is a mission in the game, the only videos which would therefore be related to it are videos showing that mission. It's probably a bad example since it doesn't already have a video, so here's a better example:
McManus is a weapon in Saints Row (1), there is already a great video embedded in the article of the cutscene in which the weapon is introduced, and therefore 100% related. In the sidebar are
  • "Saints Row The Third (VG) (2011) - 30 trailer"
  • "Saints Row The Third (VG) (2011) - Professor Genkis Reality Climax"
  • "Saints Row The Third (VG) (2011) - Professor Genki Clean trailer"
Please explain how those trailer videos for Saints Row: The Third are at all related to a weapon in Saints Row 1? --452 20:10, June 11, 2012 (UTC)
While learning how to use the "remove video" button on the sidebar, I did notice that the 6th of the 7 videos, the other 6 being trailers for Saints Row: The Third, actually was "related" to the McManus article, but only because it was the exact same video which is already embedded in the article. --452 20:13, June 11, 2012 (UTC)

Yes the module is not page specific, just as the other right rail modules are not. The tool is still in development, and meant to introduce videos that are relevant to the wiki is a whole, just always just specific pages. I shared your desire for this with the product team. I am also curious as to the types of videos this wiki would be interested in having? Can you give me some insight into what you would like to see? Thanks! --Sarah@fandom (help forum | blog) 21:17, June 11, 2012 (UTC)

The text in the "Related Videos" box clearly says "[X] VIDEOS ON THIS ARTICLE". If they are "Videos related to this wiki", then that should be made clear.
The types of videos this wiki is interested in having are videos added to articles for a specific purpose. As such, random videos about the game aren't very useful.
As I said earlier, videos aren't valued very highly on this wiki, I'll expand on that:
Some time ago, a fellow admin expressed the desire to remove videos from this wiki, as they serve little purpose. I'm indifferent towards videos myself, but played the Devil's Advocate in the discussion.
Neither of us feel that videos add anything to this wiki, the conclusion of the discussion was that videos would be tolerated, but should be used sparingly and that everything shown in videos should be described in text and shown in images.
The "related videos" list is largely trailers. We already have a page for Game Trailers. If a user wanted to see Trailers for Saints Row: The Third, they would either search for "Trailers" and find "Game Trailers" as the second results, go to the Saints Row: The Third, click "Videos" in the TOC and find a link to the Game Trailers article. (The Game Trailers article has 26 videos in the related videos sidebar, at a guess, I'd say that 20 or more of those are videos that are actually embedded in the article itself.) --452 21:51, June 11, 2012 (UTC)
user -- I'd like to explain a little bit about the past, present, and future of the Related Videos module to give you a little more context about how it works (and how it will work in the future). The RV module was originally built as a module inside an article, much like a gallery. It only had a local list and would appear empty if there were no videos on that article. The global list was added to ensure the module would never be empty -- as a sort of failsafe. After talking with some of our test wikis they liked the idea of presenting videos to their readers but were not happy with the placement of the module. We decided to take it out of the content area and put it in the right rail. Since then we've made a few minor changes but the overall article-specific nature hasn't evolved too much.
Since the change, the name "related videos" is meant to refer to the wiki's topic as a whole, not necessarily the specific page. In the future we will be moving away from page-specific programming and the module will function as more of a "videos on this wiki" module, similar to the recent-photos-uploaded module. We will make adjustments to button labels and other copy as needed. Until then, feel free to change your MediaWiki messages - but be aware that we may change ours at any time.
Let me know if you have more questions or ideas. You have a keen eye for detail! -- Trevor (Ohmyn0) @fandom 23:37, June 11, 2012 (UTC)
staff -- thanks for the details. The original concept and future plan both make more sense than the current implementation.
It would make sense to replace in-article video galleries with "Related videos" at the bottom of the article, either above or below the "read more"/"Related articles" section. I like the idea of replacing of all video galleries with a related videos module, it would have made things easier to manage, and ensure a consistent layout of videos in articles (The placement of videos is generally haphazard). Although with the examples of McManus and Game Trailers, that wouldn't exactly work, since McManus has a floating video, and Game Trailers has videos though-out.
As a title and concept, I think "Videos on this Wiki" has more potential.
  • It should be automatically populated with all videos currently on the wiki.
  • Since the videos aren't related anyway, a random selection of 4 videos will do, with an AJAX "more" button to refresh the list. (The whole thing should be javascript anyway, so as to be random while still being cached)
  • Each video listed should also include the article where it is featured, similar to Special:NewFiles. After all, the wiki is about the articles, not the videos, and the videos should promote/encourage users to go to the article itself.
Why was this wiki chosen to trial the related videos module? --452 00:04, June 12, 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, no reply, and nothing seems to have changed. I've given you my feedback. Please disable this module until it has been finished. --452 23:25, August 3, 2012 (UTC)
Per your request, I have disabled this feature here. Sarah@fandom (help forum | blog) 16:08, August 6, 2012 (UTC)
