Someone dropped by the chat to ask

How is it that The Protagonist is the same person in each game when their appearance and voice changes?

Vacation's Over indicates that the change of appearance is due to re-constructive surgery following the explosion. Why this would necessitate a sex change is up to you to decide.

My Name is Cyrus Temple establishes that visiting Image As Designed and having your face and voice completely altered is something that happens normally in the reality of the game.

In addition to the ability to change the appearance of your character are Voices - each has a slightly different backstory, the Eastern European voice in particular making comments which fit with the accent, despite having been born in Stilwater.

It's impossible for the backstories of all of the voices to be "true" at the same time, so it's up to player choice "who" The Protagonist is.

Outside of the game itself, I think the idea is that your character is, and always has been, whoever you want them to be - except for the stuff that happens in-game of course.
